Melanoma Fund Launches Pledge2Check Initiative

As part of the Slip! Slap! Swing! campaign, the Melanoma Fund has launched Pledge2Check, a new initiative that aims to encourage golfers and greenkeepers to take proactive steps in monitoring their skin health, promoting early detection of skin cancer.

Individuals are required to sign up between now and 24 November to join a community committed to performing monthly skin checks for six months. With strong backing from UK golf organisations and clubs, the charity aims to enrol over 1,000 participants during this recruitment period.

Why this initiative matters

Golf may be a healthy sport, but the realities of prolonged sun exposure combined with inconsistent sun protection habits significantly increase the risk of developing skin cancer among those who play or maintain the sport. In the UK, over 20,000 melanoma cases are diagnosed each year, resulting in approximately 2,500 deaths. Alarmingly, recent statistics reveal that only 29% of golfers regularly monitor their skin for changes, while 20% have never checked at all.

A powerful message

The initiative features a striking image created by Neverland Creative, depicting a crouching golfer morphing into a melanoma. Accompanied by the stark message, “Melanoma Can Kill,” serving as a potent reminder of the initiative’s importance.

Michelle Baker, CEO of the Melanoma Fund says; “While most of us perform health checks for other cancers, many forget or avoid skin checks. We want to address the common misconceptions and fears that prevent individuals from carrying out this simple task. Peace of mind is invaluable, and forming this important habit is something that can prevent unnecessary procedures and will save lives.”

How it works

  • Participants sign up and commit to performing monthly skin checks starting 24 November for six months.
  • Registration provides resources, including step-by-step guidance on how to check and what to watch for, inspiring stories from those affected by skin cancer, and exclusive video content from dermatologists and surgeons.
  • Participants will receive email reminders and community support to help them stay engaged.

Incentives for participation

To motivate involvement, all who complete the challenge will receive a Solex wellness goodie bag, which includes sunscreen and golf fitness essentials. Furthermore, the ten golf clubs with the highest number of sign-ups will win a sunboard and one litre of sunscreen for their players and staff, fostering a sun-safe culture on the greens.
