It’s all in the detail for Lyle & Scott AW 15

The Lyle & Scott Autumn-Winter 15 collection has been designed to provide men and women golfers with all the clothing needed to play the game, including waterproofs for the first time from the brand.

“We manufacture in Portugal because we want to maintain high quality standards that I don’t believe you can achieve outside of Europe.” says Duncan. He continues, “The detailing and finish on individual items is excellent.”  Certainly the branding is tasteful and stylish with tartan tape inside facings on polos and chino waistbands. There is also a branded side-tab on polos and contrasting yellow back neck tape for men and platinum grey tape for women. The golden eagle crest appears on men’s tops but not on women’s. “Our research showed that women do not like logos positioned on the chest area of tops”, Duncan explains.

The men’s core performance collection includes merino pullovers, a zip through jacket, chinos and shorts. “Our core performance collection focuses on key pieces that can be worn regardless of season”, Duncan confirms. The chinos have well thought-out details such as a mesh back pocket that will dry quickly and is deep enough for a score card. There are also three ‘capsule’ collections of tops based on the classic Argyle & Scott stripe design, a modern take on the argyle pattern and Prince of Wales check.

It’s been designed from the ground up, taking into consideration factors such as women want to avoid smudging make-up and mussing their hair when pulling on tops. As an international brand, women’s apparel is important for us because a greater proportion of women play golf in overseas markets including Japan, Korea and Sweden.”

The company breaks new ground with the introduction of waterproofs for both men and women. “We want to be a complete golf apparel brand and that means providing all-weather clothing”, Duncan states. “Obviously there are some well-established specialist brands in the sector but we believe the attention to detail in our waterproofs will win us customers. For example the men’s trouser has a buckle and fly and is not just a pull-up. The trouser cuffs are zipped so you can pull the trousers over golf shoes easily.” There is also an internal back pocket on the trouser to keep a score card dry and an inside pocket on the jacket to keep something like a GPS DMD dry and handy.

Again Duncan emphasises that the women’s waterproof suit has been specifically styled. “It’s a completely different cut with narrower shoulders and a more pronounced waist. There’s also a wind-zip top and a windproof pant.”

In terms of pricing a men’s polo will retail typically at £50 and a pair of chinos for £80. “We’re producing quality products that provide value for money”, says Duncan. The range will be on sale for consumers from July.
